This week sounded like a semester loading. Campuses have spent months negotiating enterprise AI access. Now some are turning those systems on for students and deciding what should happen before the first prompt is entered.

The clearest example is UCCS. Beginning August 14, all enrolled students became eligible for the university’s ChatGPT Edu environment. Access comes only after completing the “AI Literacy Foundations at UCCS” course in Canvas. Faculty and staff who already had access must also complete the course by September 25 or have their access suspended. This training requirement treats literacy as part of provisioning. Whether a required module changes behavior is an empirical question. Completion can be measured immediately; better judgment requires a more thoughtful outcome and a longer follow-up.

This brings me to the thread running through the issue: universities are getting much better at providing AI than at measuring what students learn with it. The easy dashboard will show seats provisioned, active users, and prompts submitted. The useful evaluation will ask whether students can explain their reasoning, check evidence, recognize a poor answer, and perform when the tool is removed. Those outcomes require us to design the measurement before the semester begins.

Relevant to faculty: Assume students have capable AI close at hand. Write down what each assignment is intended to reveal, then decide which parts can include AI and which require direct evidence of student understanding.

Relevant to institutional leaders: Treat the literacy requirement as an intervention worth evaluating. Course completion measures implementation. Pair it with outcomes related to judgment and responsible use.

Relevant to students and researchers: Institutional access offers stronger privacy and support. Responsible use still requires scrutiny: verify sources, inspect calculations, and notice where the model made a choice on your behalf.

College Faculty Perceptions of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education (College Board, 2026; fielded summer 2025). More than 3,000 U.S. faculty responded to the survey. Seventy-four percent believed students were using AI to write essays or papers, and 92% reported ethical concerns about plagiarism or dishonesty. Only 21% said they felt confident and had clear strategies for guiding classroom AI use.

Generative AI Use and Misuse Call for Assessment Reform in Higher Education (published in Science, May 21, 2026; included as context). The researchers analyzed responses from more than 95,000 students at 20 U.S. public research universities. Thirty-seven percent reported using generative AI at least monthly, and the researchers estimated that 9% had used it to cheat. Usage varied substantially by discipline. The authors argue that widespread AI use weakens the validity of assessments when submitted work is treated as direct evidence of individual learning.

Designing AI-Resilient Assessment in Higher Education (Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, July 16, 2026; included as recent context). This conceptual paper organizes assessment redesign around four elements: process documentation, oral defense, authentic tasks, and transparent AI-use policies. UCCS opened ChatGPT Edu to students on August 14. The university-managed environment is available to enrolled full- and part-time students. UCCS emphasizes higher usage limits, institutional controls, and the commitment that conversations and files are not used to train OpenAI’s models. Users must complete an AI-literacy course before an account is provisioned. Faculty retain authority over whether and how AI may be used in their courses.

New South Wales asked its assessment authority to consider pausing unsupervised take-home tasks. On August 10, the state government announced a review of AI’s effects on student learning and the integrity of the Higher School Certificate. The decision comes from the school sector. Its underlying assessment question travels easily into higher education: if assistance cannot be observed, what can the completed task tell us about the learner?

University of Colorado Colorado Springs: access tied to preparation. UCCS linked account provisioning to a required literacy course and placed the tool inside its existing privacy, security, and academic-integrity framework. This creates a clear intervention that the university can evaluate: after training, do users make better decisions about privacy, evidence, attribution, and appropriate use?

The broader provisioning wave, included as context. UCCS joins institutions that moved from small pilots toward supported campus infrastructure earlier this year. In February, the University of Georgia announced an $800,000 pilot providing thousands of student licenses for ChatGPT Edu and Gemini Pro. In January, the University of Arkansas expanded its approved AI offerings, including institutionally governed access to ChatGPT Edu, Gemini, NotebookLM, and Microsoft tools.

The pattern is becoming familiar: approve a limited set of tools, negotiate stronger data protections, provide training and support, and give instructors local authority over classroom use. The next phase should be evaluation. Adoption is one outcome; improvements in learning and judgment require their own evidence.

Question for discussion: What should an AI-literacy gate accomplish? A required module can establish a common vocabulary, explain privacy rules, and make institutional expectations visible. Its value depends on what happens after completion.

If success means that students verify claims more often, disclose assistance more clearly, or recognize when a task should remain theirs, the institution will need baseline measures and opportunities to observe those behaviors later.

If you are introducing an AI experience in your course this fall, ask yourself: What is one concrete outcome of student learning that I can measure?

Make it specific and observable. For example: students will verify every substantive source in an AI-assisted brief and explain why they rejected one claim. Then decide what evidence you will collect and when. A small task before the AI experience, followed by a similar task later, can show how students’ reasoning and final work have changed.
